Local guide
Cape May sits at the southern tip of New Jersey, a whole town of Victorian streets running down to the sea. Ocean views from the top-floor suites; sunset over the beach at Cape May Point. Here is how to spend the daylight around the inn.
The 1859 lighthouse stands inside Cape May Point State Park, looking out where the Atlantic meets Delaware Bay. Climb for the panorama, walk the park trails after.
One of the largest free zoos in the country, a short drive north of town, with playgrounds and woodland trails. A reliable pick for families and rainy mornings.
A three-block, open-air pedestrian mall of shops and eateries in the historic district. Easy to fold into a morning walk from the inn.
An 1879 Stick-style Victorian mansion with guided house tours; evening ghost tours run in season. Cape May's grandest house museum.
Delaware Bay sunsets from the west-facing beach at Lower Township. Hunt for polished "Cape May diamonds" (tumbled quartz pebbles) and spot the offshore wreck of the concrete ship SS Atlantus.
Cape May is a famous hawk migration stopover. Watch the flights from the hawkwatch platform at Cape May Point State Park in the autumn weeks.
Boats sail from the Cape May marinas through the warm months. Dolphins are the regulars; whales pass through on the season.
The car and passenger ferry crosses Delaware Bay to Lewes, Delaware. Book vehicle spots ahead in summer; dolphins often ride the wake.
Jersey Shore seafood is the default order: waterfront restaurants, crab houses, and raw bars line the town. Book ahead for summer weekends, when the popular rooms fill early.
A Cape May breakfast institution in a historic building. Go early on summer mornings; the line is part of the tradition.
Candy shops like The Original Fudge Kitchen and the taffy counters are Cape May staples. Worth the stop on the Mall.
Many restaurants and shops keep seasonal hours. Outside summer, check opening hours before heading out, especially for dinner.
Cape May sits at the southern end of the Garden State Parkway. On summer Fridays and Sundays the Parkway backs up, so travel off-peak if you can.
NJ Transit buses connect Cape May with Atlantic City and Philadelphia; service is reduced off-season. The Cape May-Lewes Ferry links to Delaware for the onward drive.
The historic center is compact and walkable, and bike rentals are common in town. Downtown parking fills early on summer days, so walk or ride when you can.
Cape May City beaches require beach tags in the summer season. Swim near a lifeguard, respect the posted flags, and be aware of rip currents on Atlantic beaches.
Reapply sunscreen and drink water on the sand. On park and wetland trails, stay on marked paths and use repellent; mosquitoes and ticks are part of the marsh habitat.
